Your pre-pickup checklist
Remove security items first
Start with anything that opens your home, gate, office, or storage area. Take the garage-door remote, gate clicker, building fob, spare house keys, storage keys, and mailbox keys. Check the key ring, center console, door pockets, and visor clips. If the vehicle has built-in garage controls, you will clear those later during the infotainment reset.
Pull billable items
Remove the toll transponder, parking hangtags, garage passes, neighborhood permits, employee permits, and disability placards. Then log in to the toll or parking account and remove this vehicle from the account. Pulling the tag is not always enough. If a plate, VIN, or vehicle profile remains active, charges may keep posting after donation.
Clear glovebox documents
Take out the insurance card, registration, maintenance receipts, roadside-assistance cards, loan papers, emissions paperwork, and anything with your address, phone number, policy number, or account number. Keep any records you need for taxes or your own files. Do not leave medical papers, checkbooks, warranty contracts, or identity documents in folders or manuals.
Sweep cabin and trunk
Work front to back. Check under the seats, between cushions, seat-back pockets, map pockets, cup holders, visors, sunglasses holder, center console, glovebox, door bins, cargo pockets, and trunk. Lift floor mats and cargo liners. Open the spare-tire well and side compartments. Look for tools, cash, keys, chargers, garage cards, sunglasses, documents, and small electronics.
Wipe stored vehicle data
Factory-reset the infotainment system if the car has one. Delete Bluetooth pairings, call history, saved contacts, navigation history, saved home address, garage-door programming such as HomeLink, Wi-Fi settings, app logins, and driver profiles. If you cannot find a reset menu, remove paired phones manually and check the owner’s manual for the closest privacy or data-reset option.
Remove optional add-ons carefully
Take aftermarket items you plan to keep, such as dash cams, phone mounts, upgraded stereos, removable speakers, child seats, roof racks, cargo boxes, or specialty floor mats. Keep the vehicle intact and as described when you scheduled the donation. Do not remove required parts, cut wiring, take factory safety equipment, or leave loose parts inside the car.
Leave title and keys
Put the keys and the signed-over title where the driver has been told to find them, or hand them over at pickup. Follow the title’s printed signing instructions exactly. If ownership names, lien status, odometer wording, or signature requirements are unclear, ask the Arizona DMV before signing. The car cannot complete transfer without the correct title and keys.
Do not mix these tasks
Your sweep is about removing personal property, personal data, and anything that could keep billing you. It is separate from paperwork rules and plate handling. Should I leave the insurance card in the car?
No. Remove the insurance card and any papers that show your policy number, address, or account details. Keep what you need for your records. The donation paperwork and signed-over title are enough for transfer purposes. Personal insurance documents should not leave with the vehicle.
What if I forgot something after the car is picked up?
Contact Wheels to Worth as soon as you notice. Recovery is not guaranteed once a vehicle has left, especially if it has already moved through towing, auction, or processing. That is why the 15-minute sweep matters. Check hidden areas before the keys and title leave with the car.
Can I remove a stereo, dash cam, or child seat?
Yes, if it is your removable property and you want to keep it. Remove it cleanly before pickup. Leave the vehicle intact and consistent with how you described it. Do not remove factory equipment, safety parts, required controls, or anything that would create a new damage or condition issue.
