If your car’s registration has lapsed or expired in Phoenix, you can still donate it. You do not need to renew the registration, pay back fees, or make the car drivable. As long as you hold a valid Arizona title in your name, Wheels to Worth can accept your donation, send a tow truck at no cost, and provide a tax receipt benefiting Heritage for the Blind. We work with donors all over Phoenix Metro—from Glendale and Peoria to Chandler, Mesa, and Ahwatukee—who are tired of looking at a non‑moving, unregistered car.
Here’s how it works in Arizona: vehicle registration status doesn’t control whether you can donate—ownership on the title does. We’ll help you complete the title correctly so the vehicle transfers out of your name. You don’t drive it; our licensed towing partner picks it up wherever it’s sitting—on the street in downtown Phoenix, in a Tempe apartment lot, or in a Surprise driveway. Once picked up, responsibility for the vehicle shifts to the charity. We’ll remind you to file a simple sold/transfer notice with the Arizona MVD so you’re not on the hook for future tickets, storage, or renewals. You clear space, avoid registration headaches, and support people who are blind or visually impaired.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
Check that the title is in your name
Locate your Arizona title and make sure your name is listed as the owner and that there are no undisclosed liens. Expired tags are fine; what we need is a clear title. If you’re in Phoenix, Mesa, Gilbert, or anywhere in the Valley, you do not need to visit MVD to renew the registration—just confirm the title details.
Call or submit our Phoenix donation form
Share the basics: year, make, model, current location, and that the registration is expired. Let us know if the car runs or is completely non‑drivable. We’ll answer any Arizona‑specific questions and schedule a free tow anywhere in Phoenix Metro, from North Phoenix and Deer Valley to Goodyear or Scottsdale.
Prepare the title for pickup day
Before the tow truck arrives, sign the Arizona title where indicated for seller/owner. Have a photo ID ready. You don’t need plates or current tags in place—the tow company can move it without them. If you’re unsure how to fill out the title, we’ll walk you through the Arizona requirements step by step over the phone.
Free tow from wherever the car is sitting
On the scheduled day, our partner will tow the vehicle at no cost from your driveway, street parking, storage lot, or apartment complex in Phoenix, Chandler, Tempe, Glendale, or any nearby community. The car doesn’t need to start, pass emissions, or have current registration. Once it’s on the truck, it’s no longer your problem to move or store.
File your MVD notice and receive your tax receipt
After pickup, complete an Arizona MVD sold/transfer notice (online or at an office) so the state knows the vehicle has changed hands. That helps protect you from future tickets or fees tied to the old plate. Wheels to Worth then mails your tax acknowledgment for your donation to Heritage for the Blind, typically qualifying you for a $500+ deduction.
Potential complications to watch for
Title not in your name or missing entirely
Tip: Expired registration is fine, but an incorrect or missing title can slow things down. If the title lists a previous owner or is lost, you may need to get a replacement or transfer through Arizona MVD. Contact us first—we’ll explain exactly what the MVD usually needs so you don’t make unnecessary trips.
Outstanding loan or lien still on the title
Tip: If a bank or lender is still listed as lienholder, we generally can’t complete the donation until the lien is released, even if registration is expired. Check the front of your title. If a lien appears, call the lender about a lien release. We can still pre‑screen your donation and tell you what to ask them for.
Plates and registration after the tow
Tip: Many Phoenix donors think they must keep paying registration after donating. You don’t. Once it’s picked up, remove your plates if possible and either transfer or turn them in per Arizona rules. Then file the sold/transfer notice with MVD. That combination helps cut off future renewals, tickets, or notices in your name.
Apartment or HOA towing restrictions
Tip: Some complexes in Phoenix, Tempe, or Scottsdale have tight lots or towing rules. If your expired‑tag vehicle is in a controlled area, let us know in advance. We’ll coordinate with the tow driver on access, gate codes, and timing so your car can be removed smoothly without conflict with property management or security.
